VIVA – The impact of the El Nino climate phenomenon has the potential to pose a significant threat of severe drought to agriculture.

Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, stated that besides the extreme climate, political tensions happening in various parts of the world also present significant challenges to development of agricultural sector and food security in the country. 

Therefore, the National Farmers and Fishermen Week (PENAS) XVI Year 2023 is being held.

"This is part of consolidating the strength and potential of agriculture in maintaining our national food security," he told reporters on Friday.

Various preparations have been completed to welcome the event, which will take place in the Sutan Sjahrir Air Force Base area in Padang, West Sumatra from June 10-15, 2023.

PENAS XVI Year 2023 for Farmers and Fishermen is a strategic part of the joint consolidation efforts to safeguard national food security amidst the threat of a food crisis.

The Head of the Extension and Human Resources Development Agency of Agriculture (BPPSDMP), Dedi Nursyamsi, added that PENAS XVI for Farmers and Fishermen is a grand gathering for farmers and fishermen from all over Indonesia and also serves as a platform for showcasing agricultural innovation and technology.

PENAS Farmers and Fishermen 2023 will be attended by farmers and fishermen from all over Indonesia, including governors, regents, and mayors, the numbers around 40,000 people.

This meeting forum has been taking place since 1971 and is a strategic part of the efforts to build understanding among various stakeholders in the agricultural and fisheries sectors.

"At PENAS XVI for Farmers and Fishermen, there will be various events where farmers and fishermen can showcase their innovative technologies. Farmers will not only present their technological innovations but also display their agricultural products, both in their natural form and processed. In fact, smart farming has already emerged at PENAS XVI for Farmers and Fishermen," Nursyamsi added.
