After Foldable Phones, Rollable Smartphone Will Be Marketed in 2024
VIVA – The foldable phone market is one of the highlights for the public, especially for gadget lovers. But recently, new segment with expandable screens will probably be marketed in stores as early as 2024. This new segment is regarding rollable smartphone.
Rollable screen models have already started gaining popularity in televisions with the launch of the LG Signature OLED TV R in 2020. LG also patented a rollable smartphone in 2021 but the launch was eventually canceled.
Meanwhile, Chinese brand Oppo announced its functional rollable smartphone, the Oppo X. But the company never made it available for purchase.
Reports suggest that the Oppo X features a single OLED display with 6.7 inches. It could be expanded to a more square format, which is 7.4 inches.
According to an insider named Revegnus, the company plans to launch a new format to compete with Samsung, which currently dominates the folding market, according to the Gizchina website.
Revegnus estimates that it is likely that Chinese OEMs will launch rollable phones in the second half of 2023. Even so, he did not point to a specific company.
Oppo may have an advantage over other brands in this regard. But Vivo and OnePlus could also launch their versions of foldable phones.
Huawei, Xiaomi, and Honor are also rumored not to be left out of the trend. This move by Chinese companies comes at a good time to break the South Korean monopoly in the sector of more innovative phone formats.
Increased competition in this segment is crucial to ensure better products at more affordable prices for consumers.
The advent of rollable screens in the smartphone market will bring fundamental changes to phone design. With the ability to expand and shrink the screen, rollable smartphones have the potential to offer users a larger display, without sacrificing the portability and convenience of traditional smartphones.
Rollable displays could also offer new possibilities for multitasking, gaming, and productivity.
However, it remains to be seen how durable and practical rollable smartphones will be in real-world use. As with any new technology, there may be limitations and challenges that need to be overcome before rollable phones become mainstream.
