VIVA – A total of 20 Indonesian victims of human trafficking online fraud (TPPO) were successfully got free from Myawaddy, Myanmar, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

The release effort was carried out through the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon in Myanmar and the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

Due to the cooperation of the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon with local networks that have access to the Myawaddy area - where the Indonesians were held, they were released and taken to the Thai border, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The twenty Indonesians were brought to the border in two batches; May 5, 2023, as many as 4 people, and on May 6, 2023, as many as 16 people. The Indonesian Embassy's Indonesian Protection Team will then bring them to Bangkok to undergo the repatriation process.

"We are trying to bring and evacuate them out. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has and is trying to evacuate," President Jokowi said during a press conference at Sarinah, Jakarta, on Thursday.

The President said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to communicate with Myanmar authorities so that Indonesians can be repatriated.
