VIVA – According to Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers, Professor is the highest functional position for lecturers who are still teaching in higher education units.
A professor is a lecturer/researcher who is usually employed by university education institutions. In Indonesia, the title professor is a functional position, not an academic title.
Then previously lecturers with master's degrees (S2) or even bachelor's degrees (S1) could become professors, since 2007 only those with doctoral degrees (S3) can become professors.
The existence of a professor in a university adds credibility and public trust in the quality of education in a place. Therefore, the title of professor is prestigious. Well, it turns out that there are the top 10 Indonesian provinces that have the most professors, as reported by PDDikti.kemdikbud.go.id:
West Java: 935 Professors
East Java: 935 Professors
DKI Jakarta: 764 Professors
D.I Yogyakarta: 575 Professors
South Sulawesi: 539 Professors
Central Java: 497 Professors
North Sumatra: 307 Professors
West Sumatra: 246 Professors
Aceh: 83 Professors
Banten: 72 Professors
Through this list, 10 provinces are known to have the most professors. The first position is filled by West Java province which has taken 1,000 professors, namely 935 professors spread across all state and private universities in West Java. Then followed by East Java with the same number.
The next is DKI Jakarta, D.I Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi, Central Java, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Aceh, and also Banten. Banten has 72 professors, and of course every year this number will continue to grow. Given the lecturers are encouraged to fill the highest functional position.
The requirements to become a professor are explained in more detail in Permenpan-RB Number 46 of 2013. The requirements include:
Have a Doctoral degree (S3) or equivalent
Can get at least three years after obtaining a Doctoral degree (S3)
Have scientific work been published in journals of international repute
Have work experience as a lecturer for at least 10 years
In addition to these requirements, lecturers must also fulfill the lecturer's credit score. Namely at 850 to 1,050. If you have met all the requirements following the provisions, then the lecturer can apply to become a professor. Afterward, they will have two big responsibilities. Namely:
Having the authority to guide doctoral candidates.
Obliged to write books and scientific works and disseminate ideas to the community.
So, the professors are then asked to actively teach, namely until the age of 70. This is the reason why the lecturer profession is known as the profession with the longest working life. Because in other professions the retirement period is still at the age of 50, but lecturers can still be productive in teaching until the age of 70.
