VIVA – The governments of Indonesia and Canada establish cooperation to counter terrorism with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Indonesia's National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), and Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development (DFATD). The MoU was agreed upon on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali on Wednesday, November 11, 2022.

"The signing of the MoU with Canada is a milestone that further strengthens the cooperation in handling terrorism that has been well-established so far," Head of BPNT Komjen Pol, Boy Rafli Amar remarked.

According to Boy Rafli Amar, Canada is an important partner for Indonesia in countering terrorism. The signing of the MoU is based on the Indonesia-Canada Plan of Action 2022-2025 cooperation framework. Indonesia and Canada are committed to strengthening cooperation in countering terrorism, preventing and combating transnational crime, and combating human smuggling and trafficking through capacity increase.

Bilateral cooperation in preventing and countering terrorism pays attention to human rights and gender-based approaches. Boy Rafli added that the act of terrorism that occurred in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 13, reaffirmed that the potential threat of terrorism still exists and is real.

“There is no country can handle terrorism alone. For this reason, International cooperation is necessary and must continue to be improved," Boy Rafli said.

Following the ideals of independence, he continued, Indonesia has a noble goal to realize a world order free from all threats including terrorism. The signing of MoU was carried out by Boy Rafli Amar and the Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste of Canada, Nadia Burger.
