As quoted from the History website, Halloween comes from the ancient festival of Samhain, between Ancient Celtic England and Ireland. On the day corresponding to November 1 on the contemporary calendar, the new year is believed to begin.

The Celts believed that the night before New Year's Eve, there was a boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. Therefore, on the night of October 31st, the Celtic Tribe will hold a festive and unique celebration to welcome the spirits of their ancestors back to earth.

They will light bonfires and come to the Samhain Festival wearing various costumes so as not to be recognized by ghosts. They believe that evil spirits must be expelled so as not to cause trouble and damage the crops to be harvested.

The bonfire will be rekindled even after the festival is over to warm up for the coming winter.

The name Halloween is known to have only appeared in the 7th century AD and came from the Roman Catholic Church which influenced the culture of the Celtic Tribe.

At that time, Pope Gregory III set November 1 as a time to honor all saints or All Saints Day by including some Samhain traditions. Well, the night before All Saints Day is known as All Hallows Eve which is now popular with Halloween.

In the United States, Halloween is synonymous with large, yellow, or orange pumpkins (Cucurbita moschata) used as home decorations.

This is because Halloween in the United States coincides with the pumpkin harvest across the country. So, a yellow pumpkin that has a soft texture will be carved or crafted into the face of Jack O'Lantern and the contents of the pumpkin seeds are removed, so it can be fitted with candles or lights.

According to the beliefs of United States people at that time, Jack O'Lantern was a spirit who wandered around carrying a lantern because he had succeeded in tricking the devil into not being put into hell.
