VIVA English – Brazilian authorities have fined Apple Inc in the amount of 100 million Brazilian reals or about IDR 290 billion, for selling iPhones without chargers in their packaging. A Brazilian court ruled that a charger must be included with new iPhones sold in the country.

The fine was a ruling from a Sao Paulo district court in a lawsuit filed by the association of borrowers, consumers, and taxpayers, who argued that the company was practicing abusive practices by selling its flagship product without a charger.

Apple said it would appeal the decision, as quoted from The Star website, Monday, October 17, 2022.

Previously, Apple argued that the practice was aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

"It is clear that under the justification of the 'go green initiative', the defendant charged the consumer with the purchase of the required charging adapter that was previously provided with the product," the court's decision said.

Previously, Brazil's Ministry of Justice ordered Apple to immediately suspend sales of the iPhone 12 and other newer models, prohibiting the sale of any iPhone series not equipped with a charger with every purchase.

Apple started doing this policy with the iPhone 12 due to environmental concerns. At that time, it was reported that chargers and earphones were widely distributed around the world. Charger reaches 700 pieces while earphones are up to two million.

Apple also said the decision made the box smaller. It increases the delivery space to 70 percent more products.

Samsung also followed the step of Apple, which only sold 'bars' since the Samsung Galaxy S21. The policy applies to date for all premium models.
