Prime Minister Liz Truss Places Ethnic Minorities in UK Cabinet

VIVA – Mary Elizabeth Truss or Liz Truss succeeded in becoming the new prime minister and replace Boris Johnson. Liz Truss has also chosen a new cabinet. She makes a history of not placing a white politician in the most prestigious positions in British cabinet.

Truss chooses Kwasi Kwarteng as the British Minister of Finance. For the first time, the British finance minister came from a minority, namely black skin person. Three of Kwarteng's predecessors from the Conservative Party (Tory) came from Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority (BAME) backgrounds.

Meanwhile, James Cleverly became the first black British Foreign Secretary. Cleverly's mom is from Sierra Leone and her father is white. Talked about bullying, being a mixed-race kid, and said the party needed to do more to attract black voters.

Liz Truss also chooses Suella Braverman to replace Priti Patel as UK Home Secretary. Braverman will be on duty of police and immigration.

This growing diversity is part to the Conservative Party's push in recent years to nominate a more varied parliamentary candidate.

The British government, until a few decades ago, was composed mostly of white men. It took until 2002 for the UK to appoint its first ethnic minority cabinet minister when Paul Boateng was appointed chief secretary for the UK Treasury.

However, the top ranks of business, the judiciary, the civil service and the army are all still predominantly white and despite the party's diversity campaign, only a quarter of Conservative parliament are women and six percent are from minority backgrounds.

Meanwhile, criticisms and challenges had to be accepted by Truss just hours after officially becoming Britain's new Prime Ministry. Some experts and the opposition assess Truss will fail to lead the UK because it gets a job in the midst of the crisis and massive inflation that occurred in the world.

Remembered the Conservative Party's previous record, Truss is expected not changing much.
