VIVA – Kuala Kencana is a district located in Timika City, Mimika Regency, Papua. The district is known as an administrative and residential center specifically reserved for PT Freeport Indonesia employees.

The Kuala Kencana district, covering an area of ??511 square kilometers, has a population of around 2,010 people. In the past, Kuala Kencana or the Golden Pot had a name as the New City. The name was changed by President Suharto in 1995.

This independent city consists of one kelurahan and six villages, namely Kuala Kencana Village, Iwaka Village, Naena Muktipura Village, Karang Glad Village, Mulia Kencana Village, Utikini Baru Village, and Bhintuka Village.

Here are interesting facts about Kuala Kencana:

1. Restricted Area

Kuala Kencana is not a tourist area but a district in Mimika Regency which contains a residential complex with complete facilities.

Kuala Kencana is a limited area. So, this area is not for everyone. Anyone who enters must show a certain identification card or permit in order to be allowed in.

Also, vehicles that want to go in and out will pass a strict and thorough inspection by security officers at the Timika-Kuala Kencana border checkpoint.

2. City Square Facing Qibla

Kuala Kencana has a unique square because it is designed in the style of a Javanese building.

The square is rectangular with the west side there is a mosque called the Baiturrahim Mosque. Meanwhile, in the east there is the Bethlehem Church which is shaped like a Honai house. Interestingly, this square leads directly to the Qibla or Kaaba which is in Mecca.

In the middle of the square, a monument was installed by the famous sculptor, Nyoman Nuarta, which depicts the five precepts of Pancasila.

3. Underground Utility System

This city on the island of Papua is claimed to be the first city in Indonesia to implement a utility system, including electricity, water, and underground communications. In addition, this city is also claimed to be a city that has a sewage treatment system.
