The History of Jakarta Anniversary
More than 400 years ago, in 1527, the Demak-Cirebon troops led by Fatahillah succeeded in expelling the Portuguese from Jakarta, which at that time was still called Sunda Kelapa.
Prince Fatahillah of Demak managed to seize Sunda Kelapa and changed the name to Jayakarta on June 22. So, this date is commemorated as the anniversary of the City of Jakarta.
Jayakarta at that time had a name change to Batavia when the VOC controlled this area in 1619. Historically the name Batavia has a very long-life span, which is up to three centuries (1619-1942).
When the Japanese occupation of Indonesia began in 1942, Batavia was changed to Djakarta or Djakarta Tokubetsu Shi. Then, after Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, the name Jakarta was still used by leaving the Japanese name.
In the period of the Tarumanegara Kingdom, Jakarta, which still uses the name Sunda Kelapa, grew into a trading center city. Thanks to the abundance of trade results that made the Portuguese interested in building a fort in Sunda Kelapa.
However, before the plan was realized, Prince Fatahillah first captured Sunda Kelapa in 1527 and changed its name to Jayakarta.
Trade in Jayakarta became more and more crowded, resulting in competition among European traders, especially the Portuguese, Dutch and British. The Europeans competed with each other for concessions from local authorities. The concession was to establish a trading office.
In 1619, the Dutch moved the office of the VOC trade union from Banten to Jayakarta. Later, Jayakarta was renamed Batavia and became the center of Dutch power in Indonesia.
Batavia was planned to be built to resemble cities in the Netherlands in the form of blocks and each separated by a canal. Over time, Batavia was expanded and its urban facilities were also added.
The formation of Batavia often involved the need to bring in people from various nationalities to work there. It was this effort that from the beginning made Batavia, which later developed into Jakarta, a place of mixing of nations.
In 1959, the status of Jakarta underwent a change from a municipality to a level one area led by a governor. Then in 1961, its status was changed to the DKI and has a Monas landmark.
